Classes for Children
Most classes are limited to 12 children.   Advance registration is required for all classes with the exception of pre-school art.  All materials are provided unless otherwise noted in class description.  Please make sure your child arrives on time and is picked up at the end of class time.  Children included in Family/Dual level Hockaday memberships receive 10% off of their class/workshop registrations.

Preschool Art Adventures
Ages 2 -5 with a guardian

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Using paper, paint, markers, crayons and glue, preschool artists and their adult helpers share fun art projects that encourage creativity and develop basic art skills.

Students will view original art works on display in the Museum as they learn to use the language of art. Each class session will explore how certain artists use a particular element of art or principal of design. A variety of materials and techniques will be utilized as students create their own art in related hands-on activities. All class materials provided.

Cost per session: $7 (Members receive 10% discount)

Home School Art Classes

After School Art Classes
Ages 7 - 14


3:30 PM - 4:50 PM
(includes 15 minute drawing warm up; class starts at 3:45 PM)


Tuesdays: April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 

Using kiln fired clay, this class will take you through the process of rolling slabs, making pinch pots and coils. Projects may be anything from whimsical animals to puzzle boxes, name plaques, wind chimes, or garden decorations.

Cost: $37.50


Drawing & Painting

Tuesdays: May 7, 14, 21

Explore the possibilities of drawing and painting using graphite, charcoal, ink, and watercolor. This class will focus on combining drawing and painting techniques to create works of art.

Fur, Fin & Feathers
Ages 6-12
Tues - Fri / 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Real and imaginary animals are featured in this class. Learn to draw textures for furry animals, scaly fish, and feathered friends. Practice line drawing, shading, and coloring techniques using graphite drawing pencils, colored pencils, and pastels.

Something Fishy is Going On! 
Ages 10-15       
Tues – Fri / 1:00-4:00 pm   
The catch of the week features a variety of artistic fish creations. Participants will create paper maché fish sculptures, Japanese fish kites, paint tropical fish, make fish prints, and other fish inspired art.

Garden Treasures
Ages 6-12
Tues - Fri / 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Garden inspirations from flower paintings to landscape art are the focus of this class.  A variety of media will be used to create art for and about gardens – drawings, painted garden decorations, flower rocks, and more.

Art from A to Z
Ages 8-15
Tues - Fri / 1:00-4:00pm
Investigate a variety of art techniques and media while creating your very own book. Drawing, painting, printing, and collage making are just a few of the things we will try.  Our “ABC’s of Art Book” will feature an art concept or technique for each letter of the alphabet.

July 30 - August 2
Sketchbooks & Drawing 
Ages 6-12
Tues - Fri / 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Make your own hardcover sketchbook with a drawing kit of assorted materials use and to keep.  Class sessions will be held in and outside of the Museum as you learn to learn to make quick sketches, different kinds of line drawings, how to shade, create texture, and add finishing details.

Birds of a Feather 
Ages 8-14
Tues - Fri / 1:00-4:00pm
A flock of bird inspired art projects such as clay bird sculptures, collages, drawings, and paintings are just the beginning of the fun included in this class.   Participants will also use interactive materials to learn about bird identification and adaptations, play games, and find out about our local bird population.

Cancellations & Refunds

  • Due to costs for materials, instructors and staff, the Hockaday Museum has established the following cancellation policy: 100% refund, less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 7 or more days in advance of class; 50% less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 2-6 days in advance. No refund for cancellations made less than 2 days in advance.

  • You may pre-register for classes by calling 406.755.5268. Participant's place in class is guaranteed upon receipt of full payment for the entire series.
  • To ensure the safety and well-being of participating children, the Hockaday requires prior notice of their existing health issues, as well as an emergency contact name & phone number.
  • Art classes are always fun and sometimes messy! Participants are advised to dress accordingly.
