Classes for Children
Most classes are limited to 12 children.   Advance registration is required for all classes with the exception of pre-school art.  All materials are provided unless otherwise noted in class description.  Please make sure your child arrives on time and is picked up at the end of class time.  Children included in Family/Dual level Hockaday memberships receive 10% off of their class/workshop registrations.

Preschool Art Adventures
Ages 2 -5 with a guardian

Using paper, paint, markers, crayons and glue, preschool artists and their adult helpers share fun art projects that encourage creativity and develop basic art skills.

Students will view original art works on display in the Museum as they learn to use the language of art. Each class session will explore how artists use a particular element of art or principal of design. A variety of materials and techniques will be utilized as students create their own art in related hands-on activities. All class materials provided.
Cost per session: $7 (Members receive 10% discount)

Rock Art
Apr 1, 8, 15, 22

Paint inspirational rocks and 3_D animal paintings. Imagine a curled up cat, a sleeping bear, or a crouching tiger magically appearing in the shape of a rock. Rocks will be transformed using simple shapes to sketch the features and a bit of paint to bring the animal to life.

 

Pastels
May 1, 8, 15, 22

Experiment with both soft (chalk) and oil pastels while learning some of the tricks professional artists use with this medium. Compose interesting pictures, try different methods of color blending, layering and adding details. Students should wear clothing appropriate for an art class.
Cost for 4-session class: $30

Art From Around the World

Take an imaginary trip to investigate art from the Americas to Europe, Asia and Africa. Use different cultures as inspiration to create masks, make prints, watercolor paintings, and more. Cost: $50 (early) $60 (regular). (Early registration deadline is June 8. Regular registration deadline is June 22.)

July 17-20
Art, Toys and Games of the Plains

Learn how to make and play traditional games played by children long ago. Art projects will be inspired by pieces from the Muessum's American Indian Art Collection. Students will learn about Native American decoration and design, make dolls, make miniature tipis, and learn to bead. Cost: $50 (early) $60 (regular). (Early registration deadline is June 29. Regular registration deadline is July 13.)

July 31-August 3
Art Meets Science

Focuson art projects and experiments that investigate molecular energy, density, physics, and botany. Children will keep journals as they develop ideas for art projects and go through the scientific process of experimentation. $50 (early) $60 (regular). (Early registration deadline is July 13. Regular registration deadline is July 27.)

Cancellations & Refunds

  • Due to costs for materials, instructors and staff, the Hockaday Museum has established the following cancellation policy: 100% refund, less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 7 or more days in advance of class; 50% less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 2-6 days in advance. No refund for cancellations made less than 2 days in advance.

  • You may pre-register for classes by calling 406.755.5268. Participant's place in class is guaranteed upon receipt of full payment for the entire series.
  • To ensure the safety and well-being of participating children, the Hockaday requires prior notice of their existing health issues, as well as an emergency contact name & phone number.
  • Art classes are always fun and sometimes messy! Participants are advised to dress accordingly.
