Classes for Children
Most classes are limited to 12 children.   Advance registration is required for all classes with the exception of pre-school art.  All materials are provided unless otherwise noted in class description.  Please make sure your child arrives on time and is picked up at the end of class time.  Children included in Family/Dual level Hockaday memberships receive 10% off of their class/workshop registrations.

** Announcing a Call for Entries! **

The Hockaday's 2018 children's exhibition, "Flowers, Trees & Honey Bees," will feature interpretations on the theme of plants, gardens and insects. All K-8 students of Museum Member Schools, Hockaday Art Classes and children included in Family Level Museum Memberships are eligible to participate in this exhibition.

Preschool Art Adventures

Using paper, paint, markers, crayons and glue, preschool artists and their adult helpers share fun art projects that encourage creativity and develop basic art skills.

Students will view original art works on display in the Museum as they learn to use the language of art. Each class session will explore how artists use a particular element of art or principal of design. A variety of materials and techniques will be utilized as students create their own art in related hands-on activities. All class materials provided.

Animal Artists
Nov. 7, 14, 21, 28

Create a portfolio of animal drawings and paintings. Using a variety of media, students will work on observational and expressive skills as they gain a new appreciation for the animal world. Different animal groups will be investigated each week.
Cost for 4-session class: $30

Holiday Treasures
Dec. 5, 12, 16

Create thoughtful gifts for family members and artful holiday decorations. Shhh! Projects are a secret; we don't want to ruin the surprise. Techniques will include decorative painting, embossing and print making.
Cost for 3-session class: $22.50

Famous Artist Flower Art
Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30

Chase away those winter blues by meandering through an imaginary garden of flowers. Drawing, painting and printmaking processes will be explored while making floral art in the style of master artists. Inspiration will come from famous works of art by Georgia O'Keefe, Vincent Van Gogh, Judith Leyster, Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt and Andy Warhol.

Clay Creations
Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27

Roll it, pinch it, cut and curl it ... Explore with clay to make one-of-a-kind ceramic bowls, plaques, and sculptures. This class will focus on hand building techniques, creating textures and finishing with paints or glazes.
Cost for 4-session class: $30

Clay Sculptures
March 6, 13, 20

Sculptural techniques used with ceramic clay will be investigated in this class. Projects will include the making of a 3-D bust and a creative mask to hang on the wall.
Cost for 3-session class: $25

Rock Art
April 3, 10, 17, 24

Turn rocks into 3-D paintings. Imagine a curled up cat, a sleeping bear, or a crouching tiger magically appearing in the shape of a rock. Not an animal carved in granite or marble, but a rock painted to become a 3-D animal. Rocks will be transformed using simple shapes to sketch the features and a bit of paint to bring the animal to life.
Cost for 4-session class: $30

Pastels
May 1, 8, 15, 22

Experiment with both soft (chalk) and oil pastels while learning some of the tricks professional artists use with this medium. Compose interesting pictures, try different methods of color blending, layering and adding details. Students should wear clothing appropriate for an art class.

Cancellations & Refunds

  • Due to costs for materials, instructors and staff, the Hockaday Museum has established the following cancellation policy: 100% refund, less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 7 or more days in advance of class; 50% less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 2-6 days in advance. No refund for cancellations made less than 2 days in advance.

  • You may pre-register for classes by calling 406.755.5268. Participant's place in class is guaranteed upon receipt of full payment for the entire series.
  • To ensure the safety and well-being of participating children, the Hockaday requires prior notice of their existing health issues, as well as an emergency contact name & phone number.
  • Art classes are always fun and sometimes messy! Participants are advised to dress accordingly.
