Classes for Children
Most classes are limited to 12 children.   Advance registration is required for all classes with the exception of pre-school art.  All materials are provided unless otherwise noted in class description.  Please make sure your child arrives on time and is picked up at the end of class time.  Children included in Family/Dual level Hockaday memberships receive 10% off of their class/workshop registrations.

Students will view original art works on display in the Museum as they learn to use the language of art. Each class session will explore how artists use a particular element of art or principal of design. A variety of materials and techniques will be utilized as students create their own art in related hands-on activities. All class materials provided.

Mixed Media Drawing & Painting

Explore the use of lines, shapes and color using pencil, ink, Conté crayon, pastel, watercolor, and tempera. We will use a variety of drawing, painting, and collage-making techniques while learning how to make good compositions.
Cost for 4-session class: $30

Enchanted Worlds
May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

Create underwater worlds, castles in the sky, enchanted forests, and magical creatures. Both 2-D and 3-D art projects will be featured.

Clay, Paper, Wire & Wood
Ages 6-12

Sculpture on display in the galleries will provide the inspiration as we explore balance, form, stability, weight, and motion. Young artists will use both additive and subtractive sculpture processes while creating their own pieces using clay, paper, wire, wood and found objects.

Time for Dragons
Ages 9-14

Learn about dragons in art from ancient China to Medieval Europe. Make dragon eggs, create dragon habitats, draw and paint fearsome and friendly dragons using a variety of media.

Art Potpourri
Grades 4 - 6

Experiment with a variety of art mediums and techniques. Art activities may include drawing, silk painting, transforming rocks with paint, and mixed media sculptures. Students will also create ornaments for the 2017 National Christmas Tree -- the tree will come from the Kootenai National Forest in Montana.
Cost: $75 ($65 early registration before last day of school)

Printmaking Investigations
Ages 9-14

Explore the history of printmaking and discover how to make prints of all kinds. Students will learn techniques to design and create images for making monoprints, collographs, relief prints, and screen printing.

Cancellations & Refunds

  • Due to costs for materials, instructors and staff, the Hockaday Museum has established the following cancellation policy: 100% refund, less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 7 or more days in advance of class; 50% less $5 administrative fee for cancellation 2-6 days in advance. No refund for cancellations made less than 2 days in advance.

  • You may pre-register for classes by calling 406.755.5268. Participant's place in class is guaranteed upon receipt of full payment for the entire series.
  • To ensure the safety and well-being of participating children, the Hockaday requires prior notice of their existing health issues, as well as an emergency contact name & phone number.
  • Art classes are always fun and sometimes messy! Participants are advised to dress accordingly.
