Stephanie Campos

Tucson native, Stephanie Campos began her love for drawing at a young age. At 13, she created her first realistic portrait and found her passion in painting the expressive features of the human face. Through the years, she explored various media - pastel, oil and acrylic - before settling on charcoal as her preferred choice for its contrasting range of highlights and dark tones.

Having no formal training, she draws while keeping a persistent eye on her subject to examine the fine features and detail. With every line, shadow and highlight, she re-creates the unique features of the individual onto paper.

"I love studying a face. There is information to be gathered there, especially from the eyes and mouth. An endless variety of subtle differences and similarities distinguish the characteristics between individuals. Personality, mood, and emotion also add to the varying degrees of facial expression. It is like an exciting new adventure when I draw a portrait. Historical figures from the old west continue to inspire me, along with an interest in my family's Cherokee ancestry."

"In my endeavor to capture a likeness, I find there is never a formula to follow to shortcut my way through as shadows and highlights change, reflect, and shift through movement. While I gradually fill in features and focus on lines and shapes, I tend to forget who I am drawing until I step back to examine for accuracy. You know that instant when your eyes catch a fmiliar face in a crowd? That is when I know I have captured a likeness."
