Rebecca Tobey

Growing up in East Tennessee as the daughter of an Oak Ridge scientist, Rebecca Upton’s world was strikingly different from her life today. She attended college and graduate school at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.  Discouraged from studying art by her high school art teacher, she has Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Scene Design and Stagecraft.

Rebecca Tobey began collaborating with her late husband, Gene, creating brightly colored ceramic and bronze sculptures, watercolors, jewelry and most recently kiln fired glass. She later moved to painting and then ceramic sculpture.

Rebecca is inspired by the art of the various cultures she has visited from the Southwest to South America, Polynesia and Africa. She loves to travel and soak up imagery that she explores in the studio. Her work is evolving into expressions of the world around her, and she finds the use of bird and insect imagery intriguing. “Art is the evolution of a thought process,” she says, “It’s the process of creation that excites me, the doing, not the finished product! I guess that’s why I can’t wait to get to the studio every day.”
